What is Early Childhood Screening?

Early childhood Screening is a simple check of your child's development.  Screeners will take the time to check your child's height, weight, vision, and hearing along with their social/emotional skills, language skills, motor and cognitive skills. Screening is FREE and takes about an hour to complete.

Who should be screened? 

Any child between the age of 3 and 5 years old (before kindergarten entrance) should be screened. The ideal age to screen is 3 years, 6 months old.  Screening is required prior to kindergarten entrance with the goal that students are ready for kindergarten.  If a concern or delay is identified at screening, we may be able to provide resources and services to your child, prior to kindergarten. 

Early Childhood Screening is a free and simple check of how your child is growing, developing, and learning. Minnesota State Law requires all children to complete this health and developmental screening before entering public kindergarten.  Screening is highly recommended at age 3, though it can be completed anytime between ages 3 and 5. This is not a test and does not determine "kindergarten readiness." Instead, it offers an early opportunity to affirm your child's healthy progress and identify any areas where your child might benefit from early learning support.The entire 45-to-60-minute appointment covers:

• Growth & Health Check: Height, weight, and an immunization review.
• Sensory Development: Quick, interactive vision and hearing checks.
• Developmental Progress: A playful assessment of speech, language, thinking, and motor skills.
• Social-Emotional Summary: A brief questionnaire completed by the parent or guardian.

How do I schedule a screening for my child?

Early Childhood Screenings are offered four times during the school year.  You can call the Early Childhood Office (320) 398 - 7700 ext. 2903 or email Anne Nelson, Early Childhood Coordinator, at anne.nelson@kimball.k12.mn.us for more information about screening. Appointments can now be made online via ARUX!
